Welcoming Our Little Ones Back!
September always feels like a fresh start, doesn’t it? In early years especially, the new term is filled with such a mix of emotions with returning after the summer break, new faces arriving for the first time, and a classroom brimming with curiosity (and sometimes a few wobbles).
As teachers and practitioners, we know those first few weeks are all about helping children feel safe, settled, and ready to explore. I’ve seen again and again how a sprinkle of yoga and playful mindfulness can ease that transition beautifully.
Creating a Gentle Welcome
When our youngest children arrive in the morning, their feelings can be as big as their backpacks. Simple movements like stretching tall as a tree or taking rainbow breaths together give them a sense of calm right from the start. These tiny rituals help children understand: this is a safe place.
Helping with Transitions
Early years days are full of transitions: arriving, tidy-up time, moving from play to story circle. That’s a lot for little ones to process! Adding a short “reset” moment which can be maybe a wiggle and shake, a calming breath or even a favourite animal pose, helps to make those shifts smoother and more joyful.
Building Connection
Yoga in early years isn’t about perfect poses; it’s about connection. When children crawl like bears, buzz like bees, or stretch like sunshine together, they laugh, notice each other, and begin to feel part of a community. That sense of belonging is the foundation of everything else we teach.
Supporting Growth and Independence
What always amazes me is how quickly children take ownership of these calming tools. I’ve watched three- and four-year-olds remind their friends, “Let’s do a rainbow breath!” or settle themselves with a quiet pose. These small seeds of self-regulation grow into confidence,
resilience, and independence.
A Note for You, Too
And of course, our calm presence as practitioners matters most. Sometimes taking one grounding breath alongside the children is enough to shift the whole atmosphere in the room.
So as we step into this September together, let’s welcome students with kindness, patience, and playful calm. With a few mindful tools in our pocket, we can help children feel safe, connected, and ready to shine in this brand-new year.
With love,Vicky 🌈
